How can I prepare for counselling?

None of the following points are a pre-requisite to counselling but they may help you prepare and help you get the most out of the experience.

It could be useful to think about your feelings and to find a way of describing them.

You may find the use of a journal or diary to record feelings helpful.

If you find yourself feeling angry or sad for instance then think about the circumstances that have stirred these feelings up. Try to make links between your feelings and your circumstances.

Monitoring your thoughts and feelings will help develop your self awareness. Consider rating the strength (eg. on a scale of 1 to 10) of how happy or sad or angry or hopeful or depressed etc. you feel in any given moment.

What circumstances trigger a swing (up or down) on your rating scale?

All or any of these points will help you develop self awareness and may help you to decide if counselling is right for you at this time.
